Training the husband :-)

Daniel is going to start second shooting for me at weddings. He already has one under his belt and has decided that he likes it! Yay for me! I LOVE having my husband with me while I’m working. 🙂

Daniel is actually pretty good with the camera!!! But he needed to be a little more familiar with settings and lighting, so we went to the park. I put on a pretty pink dress and grabbed the camera and we went to my new favorite location, Terry Park! I showed him the difference between good and bad light and how to identify it. Then I told him to shoot in Manual and set his own settings. Previously when he has taken pictures he put it on an Auto setting or I set his settings for him, but not anymore. 🙂 He can do it all now. Here are some photos that my amazing husband took of me!

What I’ve learned so far…..{Confident Clients}

This is something that I have wanted to talk about for a while now. Making your clients comfortable and confident in front of your camera. As a wedding and portrait photographer I don’t usually work with people who know how to model. As the photographer, it is my job to make them look the best that they can. It is my job to make them look like they are used to being in front of the camera. So, how do I do this in such a short amount of time.

Now, I don’t want you to think that I believe that I know everything. This is just what has worked for me. It really all comes down to one thing!! Talk. Yes, I said talk. Of course it is good to know how to flatter their body type with posing, and using good lighting. But if you don’t talk to them they will look awkward, because they feel awkward. Since I started in photography I have always just done this naturally, but I never realized how important it was until I was photographed myself. I stood there wondering if I was doing what they wanted, if my hands were in the right spot, if they wanted me to smile or not. Since I did not know what to do I felt so confused and awkward, and therefore the photos were not relax or confident.

When I am behind the camera I am a completely different person. Normally I am rather quiet and don’t talk a whole lot. But when I get a camera I talk non-stop. And the reason I do this is because my photos benefit from it. I am constantly giving direction and encouragement. I may sound goofy to people around me, but it’s worth it. I get excited and tell them how amazing they look and they relax and get more confident as the shoot goes on. I cannot stress enough how important it is to continually talk to and encourage your clients. Here are a few examples of the results of talking to your clients. You get real smiles and relaxed/confident model faces. 🙂

Katelyn James Coaching Session!!

On Wednesday I was sooo excited! I could not contain my excitement, I was dancing around and smiling all day. I was in a state of disbelief that I was going to meet Katelyn James! When I woke up on Thursday my excitement had changed to nerves. I was so nervous. But the moment that she said hi the nerves went away. She is so sweet and humble.

My day with Katelyn James started at noon on Thursday. I met Katelyn, her husband Michael, and Sam (another photog) for lunch in Richmond. Since I am allergic to so many things I ate beforehand because I didn’t want to risk having an allergic reaction and ruining my day with Katelyn. We got to know each other during lunch and then she took us to get frozen yogurt. Yum! After that it was time to shoot with Katelyn. She took us to a nearby parking garage and then to a field to shoot in different lighting situations. It was so awesome to have her take my head shots. I cannot wait to get them on my website!!

After we finished with the head shots Katelyn and I went to her house for our one on one time. 🙂 When we walked in we were greeted by Bokeh, her adorable dog. I’m telling you, he is the cutest dog I’ve ever seen. He look like a doll he is so cute! My one on one time with Katelyn was my favorite part of the day. She is so caring and sweet! She helped me with having confidence in my business. Which is one thing that has been holding me back. There are may changes coming soon!! I am very excited! I will be getting a logo and new website. My prices are changing as of today. And I am going to start blogging regularly.

I learned too many things to put in one blog post, so I am going to start a mini series on things that I learned and things that I already knew. It will be tips on editing, posing, making your clients feel comfortable in front of your camera, and also my journey of branding my company. Now I just need to come up with a name for the mini series. 🙂

I hope that you all have a fantastic Monday!

Here are a few photos from my day with Katelyn.

Coaching session with Katelyn James

I have wanted to meet the amazing Katelyn James since I first started following her blog over a year ago. Katelyn (in my opinion) is the best wedding photographer out there! Her photos are amazing, her personality is so fun and sweet, and she is an awesome business woman! When Katelyn started offering coaching sessions I knew that I had to go someday, but at the time it didn’t seem possible. There were too many obstacles standing in my way! First, I didn’t think Daniel would let me spend that amount of money for a coaching session. It took me a while but I finally convinced him that it was worth it. So I started saving! 🙂 Second, travel would be tricky. With my many health issues and allergies it is difficult to travel. I am severely allergic to cigarette smoke and it is very hard to avoid. Airports and are not a good place for me because I cannot stand in lines because of my heart condition. But, since I have the most amazing husband EVER, I was able to go because he drove me all the way there, from Forney, TX to Richmond, VA!!! We left on Tuesday at 5 am, stayed the night in Atlanta, and drove the rest of the way on Wednesday. The coaching session was on Thursday and we drove home Friday. He drove us straight home! We got home Saturday at 4 am. Crazy right?!? I am so grateful for him. He drove soooo many hours in crazy rain, we were stuck in that car for what seemed like forever and he didn’t complain once. He just wanted to make me happy. 🙂

So we are back home and my head is still spinning. I got some sleep this morning but I still have not recovered from all that driving. So I will tell you what all I learned on Monday. I need to wrap my head around everything! There are many changes coming! I cannot wait to see my business grow!!! Here are a few photos from our journey!

(Some of these are taken with my i Pad so they are not very clear)
